In my previous post I shared seven lessons I learned while managing my chaotic transition into motherhood. These lessons, listed in sequential order, can apply to any type of change management challenge you may be facing.
Lesson No. 1: Give Yourself Permission to Regroup
Why do you need to regroup? Because when undergoing a significant change, it is virtually impossible to maintain the same routine, schedule and expectations of your life before change (a.k.a. chaos) arrived. Regrouping could take many forms: taking a step back to figure out alternatives, cutting down on appointments/commitments, or taking notice of how change is affecting you.
Why do you need to give yourself permission? Because we tend to freeze or plow through when we go through major transitions in our lives. This fright or flight response happens automatically. Either reaction is based on instincts, learned behavior and our personalities, without any regard for options and resources around us that may offer a more effective way to cope with change.
Sometimes reacting to major changes too quickly set us back instead of forward. And although our intention is to be responsive, we fail to take a breath and allow ourselves to consider our next move before making it.
